Howard County is located in the central part of the great state of Nebraska, USA. It was established by the Nebraska Legislature on March 1, 1871, and was named in honor of General Oliver Otis Howard, a Civil War leader who later served as the Superintendent of West Point and as the Commissioner of the Freedmen's Bureau.

With an area of roughly 576 square miles, Howard County's landscape is representative of Nebraska's topography consisting of fertile, rolling plains suited for agriculture production. The area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Sioux, Otoe, and Pawnee, before the arrival of European settlers in the mid-1800s. The first non-native settlers in Howard County were homesteaders who migrated from Eastern states in search of available lands for agriculture and commerce.

The growth of settlements in Howard County was spurred by tree-claims, which allowed settlers to lay claim to a contiguous 160 acres of land upon the condition of planting a specific number of trees. This initiative helped to support the region's agricultural expansion and promoted environmental sustainability. The development of railroads during the late 19th century further bolstered the county's economy, enabling settlers to easily transport their goods to market.

Today, Howard County relies heavily on agriculture as its primary economic activity, with an emphasis on livestock production and crops such as corn, soybean, and wheat. Its largest city and county seat is St. Paul, which offers a blend of history, agriculture, and tourist attractions.

Fun fact: Howard County is home to the world's first "2 and -story outhouse" built in 1885. Located behind the St. Paul Opera House, this unique structure features a restroom facility on each floor of the building, making it a distinctive piece of architectural curiosity in the region.
