Johnson County is located in the southeastern part of the state of Nebraska, United States. Established on January 6, 1856, it is named after Richard Mentor Johnson, a US Vice President who served under President Martin Van Buren from 1837 to 1841.

Originally inhabited by indigenous tribes, Johnson County was organized by European-American settlers in the mid-19th century. The first city in the county, Tecumseh, was founded in 1856 and designated as the county seat. Tecumseh played an important role in the growth of the county and was a commercial hub for the area, greatly benefiting from the establishment of the Atchison and Nebraska Railroad in the 1860s.

Agriculture has historically been the dominant industry in Johnson County, with fertile soil making it ideal for farming. Important cash crops include corn, soybeans, wheat, and sorghum. In addition to crop production, livestock farming, particularly beef cattle, has been significant to the local economy.

One fun fact about Johnson County is that during the 1880s, the town of Tecumseh earned the nickname "The Windmill Town" because local businessman, J.H. Rushton, had built more than 1,000 windmills in the area. These windmills were used to pump water for irrigation, stock watering, and domestic use, contributing to the region's agricultural success.
