Kearney County is located in the south-central part of Nebraska, the 37th largest state in the USA. The county was officially established in 1860 and named after Fort Kearny, which was a U.S. Army outpost built to provide protection for travelers along the Oregon Trail. The spelling difference in the name of the county is attributed to a clerical error when the bill proposing the county was transcribed.

The region was primarily occupied by farmers in the early days and the development of agriculture and livestock industries shaped the area's growth. The first settlers arrived in the 1870s, and the county seat, Minden, was founded in 1876. With the expansion of the railroad system, the Burlington & Missouri River rail line reached Kearney County in 1883, providing new economic opportunities for residents.

Kearney County, like most of Nebraska, is known for its rich agricultural heritage. Corn, soybeans, wheat, and cattle production dominate the landscape. The county offers attractions such as the Harold Warp Pioneer Village, a museum that showcases the life of pioneers and contains more than 50,000 historical items from the pioneers' time.

One fun fact about Kearney County is that the city of Minden is known as the "Christmas City." Each year since 1915, it celebrates the holiday season with a magnificent light display that can be found all throughout the town square, attracting visitors from all over Nebraska and beyond to enjoy the festive atmosphere.
