Keith County is located in the southwestern region of the great state of Nebraska. Established in 1873, the county was named after Mennonite preacher Keith Neville, who later became the Governor of Nebraska. The county seat of Keith County is Ogallala, a city that was founded in 1866 due to the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad.

In its early years, Keith County's economy was primarily driven by agriculture, especially by cattle ranching. The county also played a notable role in the famous cattle trails of the late 19th century. As the trailhead for the Texas Trail, Ogallala was a prominent destination for cowboys and cattle herders to rest, buy supplies, and sell their cattle.

A fun fact about this region is that Keith County is home to Lake McConaughy, the largest reservoir in Nebraska. With over 100 miles of sandy beaches, the lake attracts numerous tourists each year, making it a popular spot for recreational activities such as boating, fishing, swimming, and camping. Lake McConaughy is also an essential source of hydroelectric power, providing energy to the surrounding region.
