Kimball County, located in the southwest corner of Nebraska, is a place rich in history and natural beauty. The county was officially established on November 6, 1888, and named in honor of Thomas L. Kimball, a vice president of the Union Pacific Railroad. Before European settlement, the area was inhabited predominantly by Native American tribes such as the Cheyenne, Sioux, and Arapaho.

The establishment of Kimball County was marked by the arrival of the Union Pacific Railroad in the late 1860s, which led to the region's growth as a major transportation hub. The town of Kimball, which later became the county seat, was founded in 1870 as an important stop along the transcontinental railroad. Further developmental boost was achieved when the Lincoln Highway, which connected New York to San Francisco, was routed through Kimball County in the early 20th century. The area also played a crucial role in the westward expansion of the United States, as pioneers and settlers passed through Kimball County on their way to the West Coast.

In terms of economic activities, agriculture and cattle ranching have long been the cornerstones of the county's economy, with corn and wheat being the primary crops. In the 1950s, the discovery of oil within the county led to a brief boom in the local economy.

One fun fact about Kimball County is that it is home to a unique landmark: the High Point Welcome Center, which is located in the city of Kimball. This building serves as a welcome center, a rest area, and a historical museum. But what makes it unique is that it stands at the highest point in Nebraska along Interstate 80, with an elevation of 5,000 feet above sea level.
