Merrick County is located in the great state of Nebraska and is part of the Grand Island Micropolitan Statistical Area. Established in 1858 and named after Elvira Merrick, the wife of one of the first landowners in Nebraska, Henry W. DePuy, Merrick County has a rich history to be explored.

This region was initially inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Pawnee, Otoe, and Omaha. European explorers, traders, and fur trappers began arriving in the area during the early 19th century. With the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854, Nebraska became a territory, opening up the land for settlement.

In 1866, Merrick County experienced a significant growth spurt due to the completion of the Union Pacific Railroad, which connected Omaha and the eastern United States to the west coast. This railroad brought many new settlers to the county and contributed heavily to its development. The county seat, Central City, was founded in 1864, prior to the railroad's arrival, by David Anderson, a frontiersman from Wisconsin.

Agriculture has played a vital role in the economy of Merrick County. The fertile soil and vast grasslands made it an ideal location for raising livestock and growing crops, such as corn, wheat, and alfalfa. Today, Merrick County remains a predominantly agricultural region.

One fun fact about Merrick County is that it is home to the annual Nebraska State Antique Tractor and Horse Plowing Bee, held in August in Central City. This event celebrates the county's agricultural heritage and showcases antique tractors, horse-drawn plows, and traditional farming methods.
