Nance County is located in the central part of Nebraska, USA. It was established on February 20, 1879, and named in honor of Albinus Nance, the fourth Governor of Nebraska who served from 1879 to 1883. Prior to its establishment, the area was part of Platte County. Fullerton, the county seat of Nance County, was platted in 1879 and named after R. A. Fullerton, the chief engineer in charge of locating a railroad through the county. The county spans an area of 448 square miles.

Nance County's history is rooted in Native American history as well, with the Pawnee and Omaha tribes being indigenous to the region. Nomadic tribes like the Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho also traveled through the area. The establishment of the Loup Bridge and Ord military road in 1871 allowed early settlers to cross the Loup River, thus encouraging further settlement and development in the county.

Agriculture and livestock have been essential components of its economy. In the early years, corn, wheat, and cattle were significant contributors to Nance County's economy. Population peaked in 1920 with 6,363 residents, but then experienced a gradual decline primarily due to urbanization and changes in agricultural practices.

One fun fact about Nance County is the presence of the Genoa Indian Industrial School, founded in 1884. The school was established to provide education and training to Native American children from different tribes across the United States. The school provided basic education, vocational training, and encouraged assimilation into American culture. Though the school closed in 1934, its impact on local and Native American history is commemorated in Genoa, Nebraska, at the Genoa U.S. Indian School Foundation Museum.
