Nemaha County, located in southeastern Nebraska, was officially established on February 20, 1855 as one of the original counties in the Nebraska Territory. The county is named after the Nemaha River, which flows through the region, and derived its name from a Native American word meaning "swampy water."

The first European settlers arrived in this area during the territorial period, with Brownville being the first town established in the county in 1854. Brownville was once a bustling city with businesses, newspapers, and even a university, but it lost prominence when the railroad bypassed the town. Auburn, the current county seat, was established in 1882 and became the center of government and commerce in the county.

The county played a significant role in the agricultural development of Nebraska, particularly in the production of corn, soybeans, and livestock. As the railroad expanded throughout the region, it facilitated transportation of goods and people, contributing to the growth and standards of living during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Today, Nemaha County, with its population of around 7,000 residents, continues to be known for its rich agricultural production.

A fun fact about Nemaha County is that it is home to Arbor Lodge State Historical Park, located close to Nebraska City, which has played a significant role in American Arbor Day history. In 1872, Julius Sterling Morton, the founding father of Arbor Day and a resident of Nebraska City, proposed the idea of a day dedicated to planting trees. Now Arbor Day is celebrated nationally and globally, with Nebraska City being referred to as the "Home of Arbor Day."
