Nuckolls County is located in the southeastern part of the great state of Nebraska. It was established on February 6, 1860, as part of the Nebraska Territory, but its organization wasn't completed until November 21, 1871, after Nebraska became a state in 1867. Nuckolls County was named in honor of Stephen F. Nuckolls, an early pioneer, member of the first territorial legislature, and a prominent businessman.

The county's early history was characterized by the settlement of pioneers, attracted by the fertile soil, which was ideal for agriculture. The establishment of the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad in the 1870s and the Missouri Pacific Railroad in the 1880s spurred growth in the county, leading to the development of several communities, including Superior, Nelson, and Hardy.

Agriculture has played a significant role in the economy of Nuckolls County throughout its history, with wheat, corn, and livestock being the primary contributors to the local economy. The region has also attracted settlers of various cultural backgrounds, such as Swedish, Danish, and German immigrants, who have enriched the cultural heritage of Nuckolls County.
