Pawnee County is a small but historically rich county located in the southeastern part of the state of Nebraska. The county, covering an area of around 433 square miles, was established in 1854 as part of the original eight counties in the Nebraska Territory. Pawnee City, the county's seat, was founded in 1856 by Samuel Parks and James Green. The name "Pawnee" is derived from a Native American tribe, the Pawnee Tribe, who once inhabited the region.

The history of Pawnee County is closely tied to native tribes, early settlers, and westward expansion. As a result, much of the region's early development was driven by agriculture and trade along the Missouri River. Pawnee City grew rapidly in importance over the years, serving as a stopping point for travelers and traders along the way.

The Pony Express, a mail service that operated from 1860 to 1861, had a route that took riders through the southern part of the county. It was a short-lived venture due to the emergence of the telegraph, but it remains an important part of the area's history.

The development of the railroad in the 1860s and 1870s contributed significantly to the growth and prosperity of Pawnee County. The Burlington & Missouri River Railroad and the Missouri Pacific Railroad each played a role in this growth.

Today, Pawnee County remains predominantly agricultural, with corn and soybeans the primary crops grown. The region is also known for its rolling hills, plentiful wildlife, and diverse landscape. There are several parks and recreational opportunities, as well as a rich historical presence, with the Pawnee City Historical Society & Museum preserving the area's past with exhibits and events.
