Platte County is located in the east-central region of the great state of Nebraska. It was established on March 12, 1855, named after the Platte River, which traverses the county. Covering an area of approximately 675 square miles, the county seat is Columbus. The region was initially inhabited by various Native American tribes, such as the Pawnee, Sioux, and Omaha, before European settlers began to arrive in the 19th century.

The development of Platte County was shaped by the westward expansion of the United States, the establishment of the transcontinental railroad, and agricultural growth. In 1862, the Homestead Act opened up the land for settlement, and the Union Pacific Railroad expanded through the area in 1866, providing access to essential resources and economic opportunities. Columbus, founded in 1856, grew rapidly as a transportation and trade hub, and other towns and villages flourished throughout the county. Agriculture, particularly corn and livestock farming, became the region's primary industry, and this remains true today.

A fun fact about Platte County is that it is home to the Andrew Jackson Higgins National Memorial, which includes a replica of a World War II-era Higgins Boat. 'Higgins Boats' were the landing crafts used by the U.S. military for amphibious landings during the war. Andrew Jackson Higgins, who was born in Columbus, is recognized as the inventor of this critical piece of military technology, and General Dwight D. Eisenhower even called him "the man who won the war for us."
