Red Willow County, located in the great state of Nebraska, was established on December 23, 1873. It was named after the Red Willow Creek, which flows through the county. The name "Red Willow" comes from the Dakota Indian term "Chanshasha Wakpala," referring to the red dogwood shrubs that grew along the creek banks, known for their distinctive red bark.

The county seat is the city of McCook, which was founded in 1882 when the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad expanded through the region. McCook was named after Alexander McDowell McCook, a Union Army general in the American Civil War.

One fun fact about Red Willow County is that it was the birthplace of George W. Norris, born in 1861. Norris was a prominent U.S. Senator and represented Nebraska in the Senate from 1913 to 1943. He was instrumental in the creation of the Tennessee Valley Authority and strongly advocated for the nonpartisan election of state legislators. As a result, the Nebraska Unicameral Legislature is the only nonpartisan and unicameral state legislature in the United States, thanks largely to Norris's efforts.
