Rock County is located in the north-central part of Nebraska and was established on February 22, 1887. It is named after Rock Creek, a tributary of the Niobrara River, which flows through the county. The county seat is Bassett, a small town with a population of just over 500 residents. The region was initially inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Sioux, Ponca, and Omaha. European settlers, mainly of German, Irish and Swedish descent, began arriving in the area in the late 19th century.

One of the most significant moments in the early history of Rock County was the arrival of the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad in 1888. This development brought more settlers to the region and helped establish the agricultural sector in the area. Rock County has a rich farming and ranching tradition, with fertile grasslands and ample rainfall supporting agriculture, primarily cattle ranching, and the growing of crops such as corn, oats, and wheat.

A fun fact about Rock County is the presence of the Calamus Reservoir and the Calamus River, which offer a variety of recreational activities. The reservoir, completed in 1986, spans over 5,100 acres, providing a scenic escape for fishing, boating, and wildlife watching. The area is also home to the Samuel R. McKelvie National Forest, a vast expanse of nearly 116,000 acres of native grasslands and Pine Ridge woodland, where visitors can enjoy hiking, camping, and bird watching.

This region of Nebraska offers an authentic American Midwest experience while showcasing its intriguing history, natural beauty, and agricultural heritage.
