Sheridan County is located in the northwestern part of the great state of Nebraska. Established on February 21, 1885, the county was named in honor of General Philip H. Sheridan, a prominent Union General during the American Civil War and a key figure in the Indian Wars that followed. The county seat is the city of Rushville.

Sheridan County was originally inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho, before Euro-American settlers began to arrive in the late 19th century. The region was initially part of unorganized Indian Territory before becoming a part of Nebraska Territory upon its formation in 1854. Following the American Homestead Act of 1862, the region saw an influx of settlers, resulting in increased tension between these new arrivals and the indigenous population.

The county grew in size and development through the early 20th century, with the expansion of the railroad and the emergence of the telegraph and telephone systems. Agriculture has always been the primary economic driver in Sheridan County, with cattle ranching playing a particularly significant role.

One fun fact about Sheridan County is that it is home to the geological formation called Toadstool Geologic Park. This park, located within the Oglala National Grassland, features unique and other-worldly rock formations called 'hoodoos' that have been created over millions of years by wind and water erosion. The landscape resembles that of the surface of the moon and is a popular site for both tourists and geologists.
