Sherman County is located in the southern half of the great state of Nebraska. It was named in honor of General William Tecumseh Sherman, a renowned Union general during the American Civil War. The county was established on February 1, 1871. Although the area was initially settled by pioneers and homesteaders, the arrival of the Union Pacific Railroad in 1867 led to its rapid growth and development. The railroad's connection to the larger cities of Kearney, Axtell, and Gibbon expanded the county's trade and economic opportunities.

The terrain of Sherman County is characterized by rolling plains, lush farmlands, and picturesque lakes, which support a healthy agricultural economy. The county's main industries include cattle, hog, and sheep farming, as well as corn, soybean, and sorghum production.

At the heart of Sherman County is Loup City, the county seat, founded in 1873. Other towns in the county include Ashton, Hazard, Litchfield, and Rockville.
