Sioux County, located in the great state of Nebraska, was established in 1877, named after the Native American Sioux tribe. It is situated in the northwestern part of the state and covers approximately 2,067 square miles. Harrison, the county seat, was founded in 1886 during the expansion of the Fremont, Elkhorn, and Missouri Valley Railroad. The county's population has always been relatively small, reflecting its predominantly rural character.

Historically, Sioux County has a rich connection with Native American heritage, particularly with the Oglala Lakota Sioux tribe. The area was historically inhabited by different tribes before the arrival of European settlers in the 19th century. The Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868 had assigned much of this land to Sioux tribes.

Among the notable attractions in Sioux County is the Agate Fossil Beds National Monument. The monument, established in 1965, features well-preserved Miocene epoch mammal fossils, and several ancient Native American artifacts, which belonged to the Oglala Lakota Sioux tribe. These fossils and artifacts offer a window into the life and ecology of the area millions of years ago.

Fun fact: Sioux County boasts the unusual distinction of having the highest altitude of any county in Nebraska. Harrison, its county seat, sits at an elevation of approximately 4,800 feet above sea level! This elevation results in a unique landscape filled with picturesque buttes, valleys, and rolling grasslands, setting it apart from other parts of Nebraska.
