Thayer County, located in the great state of Nebraska, has a rich and fascinating history. Established on March 18, 1856, the county was originally named Jefferson County, but in 1863, the decision was made to rename it in honor of General John Milton Thayer, a prominent Union officer during the Civil War and later a United States Senator from Nebraska.

The region was primarily settled by homesteaders in the 19th century, who were drawn to the fertile land and ample opportunity for agriculture. One of the county's early settlers was William O. McKay, who arrived in the region in 1864 and became Thayer County's first postmaster. Over time, the population grew, and several towns were established, including Hebron, the county seat.

Thayer County's economy has historically been driven by agriculture, with corn, wheat, and livestock being the primary products. The early 20th century saw the arrival of the railroad, which further boosted the area's economy. The Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad came through Hebron in 1871, and the St. Joseph & Grand Island Railroad reached the region in the 1880s.

A fun fact about Thayer County is that it is home to the world's largest porch swing, located in Hebron City Park. The swing was built in 1985 and has enough space to accommodate 25 adults or up to 50 children, making it a popular attraction and a point of pride for the community.
