Thomas County is located in the scenic Sandhills region of the Great State of Nebraska. Established on November 23, 1887, the county was named in honor of George H. Thomas, a Union General during the American Civil War. Covering approximately 714 square miles, it ranks 44 out of 93 counties in terms of area in Nebraska.

The region was initially settled by ranchers who found the land suitable for cattle grazing. As the railroad expanded across the state, small communities and trading centers began to emerge, providing essential goods and services to the growing number of settlers. Thomas County is an agricultural-based community, with ranching and farming being the primary sources of livelihood for its residents.

The county seat is Thedford, which is also the largest community in the area. The community's growth was stimulated by the establishment of the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad line through the area in 1887.

One fun fact about Thomas County is that it is home to the Dismal River Golf Club, which is a unique golf course set among the picturesque Sandhills. With its challenging courses, the facility attracts golfers from around the country who appreciate its breathtaking views and the opportunity to play among Nebraska's natural beauty.
