Washington County is nestled in the great state of Nebraska and has a rich history dating back to its official formation on March 6, 1855. The county was named after the first President of the United States, George Washington, honoring his significant contributions to the nation. Covering an area of 396 square miles, Washington County has established itself as an essential region in the eastern part of Nebraska.

Prior to the official formation of the county, the area was inhabited by various Native American tribes, such as the Pawnee, Otoe, and Omaha tribes. Once explorers and fur traders from Europe began to settle in the region, it dramatically transformed over time. The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 allowed the County to be organized, and it subsequently attracted more pioneers that were looking to establish roots in the American West.

Blair, the largest city in Washington County, was founded in 1869 as a railroad hub to support the expanding national rail system. Over the years, agriculture has stood out as the primary economic activity in the region, with corn being the central crop. The county is also known for its picturesque landscapes, such as "The Great Smoke Hills", which today is called Fontanelle Hills.

One fun fact about Washington County is that it played a crucial role in the development of Arbor Day. J. Sterling Morton, an early advocate for the importance of trees and sustainable land management, arranged a tree-planting holiday in Nebraska on April 10, 1872. It was said that about a million trees were planted on that first Arbor Day, and it later gained recognition not only in Nebraska and Washington County but also throughout the United States and the rest of the world.
