Wayne County is located in northeastern Nebraska and covers an area of approximately 443 square miles. The county was established on February 18, 1867, and named after General Anthony Wayne, a Revolutionary War hero. The county seat and largest city is Wayne.

The history of Wayne County can be traced back to its early inhabitants, the Native American tribes, particularly the Omaha, Ponca, and Sioux, who roamed the area before the arrival of European settlers. It remained largely uninhabited until the 1860s when settlers began to move westward in search of land during the period of westward expansion in the United States.

The town of Wayne was established in 1881 when the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis, and Omaha Railroads extended their lines, leading to a boom in the area's economic development. The railroads played a crucial role in shaping the county's growth as they facilitated the transportation of goods, people, and supplies.

Agriculture has been the backbone of Wayne County's economy with the rich soil providing suitable conditions for farming. The main crops produced in the region include corn, soybeans, alfalfa, wheat, and oats. In addition to agriculture, the local economy is supported by small businesses, manufacturing, and educational institutions such as Wayne State College.

One fun fact about Wayne County is that it hosts an annual event called the "Chicken Show," which is held in Wayne every July since 1981. The event celebrates the region's poultry industry and offers a variety of activities, including a chicken cook-off, egg contests, arts and crafts, live music, and even a world-record-setting chicken dance. The Chicken Show is a unique celebration and a great source of pride for the community.
