York County, located in the great state of Nebraska, was established on February 25, 1855, when Nebraska was still a territory. It spans an area of 576 square miles and sits in the eastern part of the state. The county was named in honor of the city of York, in the state of New York.

One of the defining characteristics of York County's early history was its role in the westward expansion of the United States, with early pioneers frequently passing through the area on their way to settle in the new western territories. This was facilitated by key transport routes such as the nearby Oregon Trail and the Overland Trail. In these early days, York County was mostly used as a route for transportation, but settlers quickly took notice of its fertile soil, beautiful landscapes, and abundant wildlife.

York, the county seat, was platted in 1870, and the county experienced a growth in population with the arrival of the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad. Agriculture has been a primary industry in the region since its inception, with settlers cultivating a variety of crops, including corn and wheat, as well as raising livestock.

One fun fact about York County is that it's known for the Reinke Manufacturing Company, which was founded in 1954 in Deshler, Nebraska. The company specializes in the production of irrigation systems and quickly became a significant contributor to the county's economy. Today, Reinke pivots and lateral move systems are distributed worldwide and are essential for farm irrigation in many countries.
