Coos County, located in the great state of New Hampshire, is the northernmost county in the state, bordering Canada's Quebec province. The county was established on December 24, 1803, and its name originates from the Native American word "coos" meaning "pine tree," which reflects the region's abundance of pine trees that were essential to the early timber industry.

The area was initially inhabited by the Abenaki Indian tribe, which was linguistically and culturally linked to the Algonquin people. European settlers, mainly of English and French descent, began to move into the region in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, drawn by its abundant timber resources and fertile land. The timber trade and agriculture became the foundation of the county's economy during its early history. As industrialization spread across the region, the nearby Androscoggin River became an important source of water power, contributing to the growth of sawmills, paper mills, and other industries that relied on the region's natural resources.

Coos County is known for its beautiful natural scenery and wide range of outdoor recreational opportunities, such as hiking, skiing, snowmobiling, and wildlife watching. The county is home to the White Mountain National Forest and several state parks, making it a popular destination for nature enthusiasts.

Fun fact: One of the most famous aspects of Coos County's history is the grand resort hotels that were built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, catering to wealthy visitors seeking a taste of the region's rugged beauty and outdoor activities. The Mount Washington Hotel, opened in 1902, is a stunning example of the grand architecture and luxury of these historic establishments. The hotel, now known as the Omni Mount Washington Resort, still operates today and is a National Historic Landmark.
