Bergen County, New Jersey
.Bergen County is located in the northeastern corner of the state of New Jersey, as part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. Established in 1683, Bergen County holds a significant place in American history due to its strategic location and early settlement. It is one of the four original counties in the East Jersey area and is named after Bergen, Norway, reflecting the Dutch and Norwegian influence on the region at that time.
Initially, the area was inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans who coexisted with Dutch and other settlers arriving from Europe in the 1600s. With fertile lands, the county played an important role in farming, leading to the growth of small villages and settlements.
Bergen County was also a significant battleground during the American Revolutionary War. Its strategic location led to many skirmishes between American and British forces. The famous Steuben House in River Edge, New Jersey, which functioned as George Washington's headquarters during one of the campaigns, is proof of the county's historical significance.
Today, Bergen County is a diverse and thriving area with a mix of suburban neighborhoods, shopping centers, and natural parks. It is known for its excellent schools and is considered a desirable place to live while offering easy access to New York City.
Fun Fact: In Bergen County, this region is known for its Blue Laws - a set of laws that restrict certain retail activities on Sundays. The Blue Laws were initially introduced in the 17th century to encourage rest and religious observance but are still in place today primarily to reduce traffic congestion and maintain a peaceful atmosphere on Sundays. As a result, most of the retail stores, except for essential services, remain closed on Sundays in the area.
