Essex County is located in northeastern New Jersey and has a rich historical background. Established in 1682, it is one of America's oldest counties and was one of the original 12 counties created in the Province of East Jersey. Essex County's historical significance stems primarily from its role in the American Revolution, as it was a key location for both British and American forces.

The county was initially settled by Europeans in the 1600s, as a result of Dutch and English colonization. The area was primarily dominated by agriculture and trade, eventually transitioning to industry during the Industrial Revolution. The county's growth was bolstered by the construction of railroads and the establishment of Newark, the state's largest city, as the county seat in 1836.

Through the years, Essex County became a prominent destination for immigrants, establishing a rich, diverse population. During the 19th century, it was a hub for the leather industry, thanks to the abundance of tanneries.

One fun fact about Essex County is that it was a crucial site during the Revolutionary War. Located within the county is Thomas Edison National Historical Park, preserving the home and laboratory of the famous inventor, Thomas Alva Edison. Edison's laboratory in West Orange, NJ, played a significant role in the 20th-century technological revolution and has the distinction of being one of the first large-scale research facilities in America.
