Gloucester County is located in the southwestern part of the great state of New Jersey. It was founded in 1686, making it one of the oldest counties in the state. The county is named after the city of Gloucester in England and is part of the Delaware Valley region.

The area now known as Gloucester County was originally inhabited by the Indigenous Lenape people before the arrival of European settlers. Swedish colonists were the first Europeans to establish settlements in the territory in the 1630s, while the Dutch and English settlers followed shortly thereafter. In 1681, English Quakers fleeing persecution established West New Jersey, which included present-day Gloucester County. The area was governed by two separate entities-the provinces of East and West Jersey-until 1702 when they were merged into a single province.

During the Revolutionary War, Gloucester County played a crucial role by providing resources and soldiers to fight for American independence. Hessian troops were once stationed in strategic cities such as Woodbury, a historical hub in the county.

The county's economy has historically relied on agriculture, industry, and transportation due to its strategic location near the Delaware River. Key industries developed over time, such as glass production, which played a significant role in the growth and development of towns like Glassboro.

A fun fact about Gloucester County is that it is home to the oldest ongoing agricultural fair in the United States, the Gloucester County 4-H Fair, which began in 1947. The fair continues to celebrate the rich agricultural history of the county and features livestock exhibits, equestrian competitions, and other activities that showcase local farming culture.
