Mercer County is located in central New Jersey and was officially established on February 22, 1838, when it was separated from surrounding counties like Burlington, Hunterdon, and Middlesex. The county is named after General Hugh Mercer, a prominent figure in the American Revolutionary War and close associate of George Washington.

Trenton, the state capital of New Jersey, sits in Mercer County and carries a rich history in its own right. During the Revolutionary War, the city became the site of the pivotal Battle of Trenton, wherein George Washington's Continental Army defeated Hessian troops in December 1776. This military success was a turning point in boosting American morale and revitalizing the continental forces.

Amidst the industrial revolution, Mercer County flourished as a manufacturing hub, particularly within the city of Trenton, thanks to its ideal location near the Delaware River. The slogan "Trenton Makes, The World Takes," coined in 1917, signifies the city's significant role in producing iron, steel, ceramics, and other goods in the early 1900s.

One fun fact about Mercer County is that it's home to Princeton University, an Ivy League institution established in 1746. The University played a vital role in America's colonial history, and its prestigious reputation endures to this day, boasting illustrious alumni, such as Albert Einstein and U.S. presidents James Madison and Woodrow Wilson.
