Their descendants, the Pueblo Indians, still have an influential presence in Bernalillo County today. The arrival of Spanish settlers in the late sixteenth century marked the beginning of a new era, with various Spanish colonial influences that remain present to this day. The county experienced significant growth during the 19th century, as American railroads expanded westward and connected the region to the rest of the nation.
