Chaves County, located in the southeastern part of the great state of New Mexico, was established on February 25, 1889. Named in honor of Colonel Jose Francisco Chaves, a military leader, politician, and pioneer, the county spans an area of 6,075 square miles. With Roswell as the county seat, Chaves County's economy is rooted primarily in agriculture, oil and gas industry, and dairy production.

The region was first inhabited by Native American tribes like the Mescalero Apaches, who were eventually displaced due to westward expansion and an influx of settlers in the 19th century. Both Mexican and American settlers moved into the area, contributing to the diverse history and cultural influence in the county. Chaves County played an important role in the development of the railroad, with its establishment significantly influencing its growth and prosperity.

A fun fact about Chaves County is that in 1947, it became the center of the infamous Roswell UFO incident. Some believed that a UFO crashed and was recovered by the military, while the government claimed it was a high-altitude surveillance balloon. This event sparked immense interest in extraterrestrial life and continues to be a subject of fascination and speculation even today. The city of Roswell has since become synonymous with UFOs and aliens, drawing visitors from around the world to its annual UFO Festival and popular tourist attraction, the International UFO Museum and Research Center.
