Cibola County is located in the great state of New Mexico, USA. Established on June 19, 1981, it is the youngest and 33rd county in the state. The county was formed by redistricting parts of the neighboring Valencia County, with the county seat located in the city of Grants. The name "Cibola" is believed to be derived from the native Zuni word, "cibola," meaning "the Buffalo" or, by extension, referring to a place of wealth and abundance.

Cibola County has a rich history that can be traced back to numerous native cultures, including the Ancestral Puebloans (also known as the Anasazi), the Zuni Native American tribe, and the Navajo people. The area was first visited by European explorers in the 16th century when Spanish Conquistadors passed through in search of the legendary Seven Cities of Gold.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, with the arrival of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad, Cibola County flourished as a major logging and livestock center. The region also experienced a uranium boom in the mid-20th century, which transformed Grants from a small railroad town into a bustling mining community.

One fun fact about Cibola County is that it is home to several ancient pueblo sites such as Acoma Pueblo (also known as Sky City), an iconic and well-preserved historic settlement. Believed to have been inhabited since around 1100 A.D., Acoma Pueblo is one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in North America, with residents still living in traditional pueblo-style dwellings to this day.
