Dona Ana County is located in the southern part of New Mexico, occupying an area of 3,804 square miles. Established on February 9th, 1852, the county is among the first nine counties created by the New Mexico Territory law. Its name originated from Dona Ana Robledo, who in 1695, made a rest stop called Paraje de Robledo en route to El Paso. This made her the first known European woman in the area.

The county's history is punctuated by a rich tapestry of diverse cultures, including Native Americans, Spanish settlers, Mexican traders, and American pioneers. The region's multilayered heritage can be attributed to different forces like Spanish colonization, Mexican governance, and its eventual incorporation into the United States.

A pivotal moment in Dona Ana County's history came with the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, which officially annexed the area to the United States after the Mexican-American War. The Gadsden Purchase in 1853 further cemented its status as a U.S. territory.

Today, Dona Ana County is home to the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument, established in 2014 to protect its unique and diverse natural, archaeological, and historical resources. It is also home to the White Sands Missile Range, one of the largest military installations and rocket research facility in the United States.
