Eddy County, located in the southeastern region of the great state of New Mexico, was established on February 25, 1889. Named after cattle baron Charles B. Eddy, the county was an important player in the development of southeastern New Mexico. Carlsbad, the county seat, was named after the famous European spa, "Karlovy Vary," located in present-day Czech Republic, due to the area's mineral springs.

The county thrived mainly on agriculture, but the discovery of oil in 1924 also made it a significant contributor to New Mexico's mineral wealth. The newly found oil reserves led to a boom in the economy, drawing people and businesses to the region.

One of Eddy County's most famous landmarks is the Carlsbad Caverns National Park, home to the renowned Carlsbad Cavern. This park was established in 1930 to preserve more than 100 caves, including the well-known Big Room - the largest cave chamber in North America. The Caverns are not only a popular tourist attraction but also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The caverns are home to many unique species, including thousands of Brazilian free-tailed bats.

Fun Fact: Eddy County contains New Mexico's lowest elevation point at 2,842 feet above sea level, which can be found near Red Bluff Lake in the southeastern part of the county.
