Grant County is located in the southwestern part of the state of New Mexico and was founded on January 30, 1868. It is named in honor of General Ulysses S. Grant, who served as the 18th President of the United States and played a crucial role in the Civil War. The county has a rich history dating back to prehistoric times, with evidence of ancient Native American settlements.

During the Mexican-American War in the 1840s, the region became part of the United States, following the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1849, the US Army established Fort Bayard to protect settlements in the region from Apache attacks.
