Lea County, situated in the southeastern part of the great state of New Mexico, was established on March 17, 1917. The county was named in honor of Captain Joseph C. Lea, a Civil War veteran and prominent local figure who helped to develop the region by investing in businesses, railroads, and real estate.

Before it was settled by European Americans, Lea County was inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Comanches, Apaches, and Navajos. In the late 1800s, cattle ranching became increasingly important to the local economy, drawn to the area by the favorable grazing lands.

In the early 20th century, Lea County experienced a significant upswing in population and economic importance as it became part of the booming Permian Basin oil and gas industry. The discovery of oil in 1928 led to the rapid development of towns such as Hobbs, Eunice, and Jal - which remain key centers of oil and gas production in the region.
