Quay County, located in the great state of New Mexico, was officially established on February 28, 1903, named in honor of Pennsylvania Senator Matthew Quay, a prominent Republican politician of the time. It is situated in the eastern part of the state and covers an area of 2,882 square miles. The county seat, Tucumcari, originally known as Ragtown, was renamed after Tucumcari Mountain in 1908, which itself derives its name from a Comanche word "Tukumukaru," meaning "place of ambush" or "rest."
The region holds a rich history that spans thousands of years, with its early inhabitants including the Clovis and Folsom Paleo-Indians, who left behind artifacts dating as far back as 7,000 BC. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Quay County witnessed an influx of European-American settlers who came to establish agricultural and ranching communities.
One fun fact about Quay County is its association with the legendary Route 66. Tucumcari was once known as the "Heart of the Mother Road" during the heyday of Route 66 in the mid-20th century. The famous highway, which stretches from Chicago, Illinois to Santa Monica, California, played a significant role in the development of the county, as it attracted travelers and businesses alike. Today, visitors can still experience a piece of this iconic era at the New Mexico Route 66 Museum and various vintage motels, diners, and other establishments that line the route through the county.
