Rio Arriba County, located in the great state of New Mexico, is nestled in the northern part of the state and shares borders with Colorado to the north and the counties of Taos, Mora, Santa Fe, and Los Alamos. Established on February 9, 1852, Rio Arriba County has a rich history dating back to the ancestral Puebloan peoples who inhabited the region around 1200 CE. Later, Spanish explorer Francisco Vazquez de Coronado explored this region in 1540 in search of the fabled Seven Cities of Gold.

The county seat is Tierra Amarilla, but Espanola is the largest city in the region. Throughout the years, the area has been characterized by a blend of Native American, Spanish, and Anglo-American cultures, as well as the strong influence of Hispanic settlers from the 16th to the 18th centuries. Rio Arriba's land is marked with stunning mesas, canyons, and forests, such as Carson National Forest on the eastern side of the county and Santa Fe National Forest on the south.

One notable historical landmark of Rio Arriba County is the San Gabriel de Yunque-Ouinge (also known as San Gabriel de Yunque), a Spanish colonial settlement founded in 1598 by Juan de Onate. The settlement served as the first capital of New Mexico preceding the establishment of Santa Fe in 1610. Today, the county is home to various Pueblos, Native American tribes, and Hispanic communities, creating a diverse cultural landscape.

Fun fact: Rio Arriba County has one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in North America - Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo (formerly San Juan Pueblo). Founded around 1200 CE, Ohkay Owingeh is known for its beautiful pottery, cultural traditions, and a deep connection to the land.
