Churchill County, located in the western part of the state of Nevada, was founded on July 1, 1861, named in honor of Fort Churchill, which was named after Sylvester Churchill, a Mexican-American War hero and Inspector General of the US Army. Prior to this, the region was home to indigenous peoples, specifically the Northern Paiute tribe. The establishment of Fort Churchill in 1860 provided protection for early settlers and travelers along the Pony Express and Overland Routes.

Fallon, designated as the county seat in 1902, played a significant role in growing Churchill's agricultural industry, thanks to the Newlands Reclamation Act of 1902, which enabled an extensive irrigation system to be developed. This turned the county into a prosperous farming community, known for cultivation of alfalfa, corn, potatoes, and raising livestock.

The Naval Air Station Fallon, established in 1942, has remained a significant part of the area's economy, serving as the United States Navy's premier air-to-air and air-to-ground training facility.

A fun fact about Churchill County is that it houses the Grimes Point Archaeological Area, which features fascinating Native American petroglyphs that are believed to be more than 8,000 years old. The area provides a glimpse into the lives of the region's early inhabitants, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
