Elko County, located in the northeastern corner of the great state of Nevada, was established on March 5, 1869. It is the fourth largest county in the United States, covering more than 17,000 square miles. Elko County was created from the eastern part of Lander County and named after the town of Elko that serves as the county seat.

In the 1860s, the discovery of gold led to widespread mining operations in the region. Later, the Central Pacific Railroad was built, running through Elko County and further promoting trade and development. As a result, a substantial number of settlers, including Chinese laborers, European immigrants, and other prospectors, were attracted to the area.

Elko County's history has deep roots in the ranching and railroad industries, which have helped boost Nevada's economy since the area's early days. Ranching initially played a significant role in development, as livestock needed to be transported across the country. Agriculture remains an important aspect of the local economy, which presently encompasses gold mining, natural gas extraction, and tourism.

Fun Fact: Elko County is home to the Ruby Mountains, which is a unique, glacier-carved range in the Great Basin. Known as the "Nevada Alps," the Ruby Mountains offer visitors breathtaking sceneries, outstanding outdoor recreation opportunities, and a rich diversity of flora and fauna, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and adventurers alike.
