Esmeralda County is located in the southwestern part of the state of Nevada, a region of the USA known for its colorful mining history, deserts, and breathtaking landscapes. Established on November 23, 1861, Esmeralda County was initially part of the original nine counties in the Nevada Territory. The county was named after the Esmeralda Mining District, which derived its name from the Spanish word "esmeralda" meaning "emerald," due to the abundance of minerals in the area.

The early history of the county is deeply rooted in mining. The region saw multiple mining booms starting with the silver discoveries during the 1860s, followed by gold discoveries in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The town of Aurora emerged as one of the first thriving mining communities, and Goldfield later became the county seat in 1907, as the mineral fortunes shifted in that direction. Goldfield was, at one time, the largest city in Nevada boasting a population of around 20,000 people at its peak.

Fun fact: Esmeralda County holds the distinction of having the lowest population density of any county in the United States, with only about 0.3 people per square mile. This has earned it the nickname of "America's emptiest county."
