Lander County, located in the great state of Nevada, was established in 1862 during the Silver Rush. Named after Frederick W. Lander, a transcontinental railroad surveyor and explorer, it played a crucial role in Nevada's growth during the 19th century. The county initially occupied a vast area from which several other counties were later formed. Its current boundaries were established in 1886, and it now covers an area of 5,519 square miles.

Austin, the county seat, was once a bustling mining town that attracted thousands of miners and businessmen during the peak of the Nevada Silver Rush. During the mid-19th century, rich veins of silver ore were discovered in the area, and it quickly became an economic hub.

A fun fact about Lander County is the presence of Stokes Castle, a three-story granite tower built by Anson Phelps Stokes in 1897. The structure was designed as a summer home for Stokes' family but was occupied for a very short time. Today, Stokes Castle stands as a historical monument, offering a glimpse into the opulence and extravagance of the late 19th-century mining boom in Nevada.
