Lyon County, located in the great state of Nevada, was established on November 25, 1861, as one of the original nine counties in the state. It is named after General Nathaniel Lyon, the first Union General to be killed in the American Civil War. Covering an area of 2,016 square miles, Lyon County lies in western Nevada, with the county seat being Yerington.

During the mining boom in Nevada in the 1860s, Lyon County became heavily influenced by the discovery of silver and gold in the area. In particular, the Comstock Lode in neighboring Storey County spurred the growth of Lyon County as workers migrated to the area to take advantage of the mining opportunities. The county's population grew even more when the Central Pacific Railroad was built along the Truckee River in 1868, providing better transportation and access to the region.

Over time, Lyon County became increasingly well-known for its agriculture, specifically in the areas around Fernley, Silver Springs, and the Mason Valley. The Newlands Project, initiated in the early 20th century, was designed to bring irrigation water from the Truckee and Carson Rivers to over 57,000 acres of farmland. This project tremendously transformed Lyon County's agricultural landscape.

One fun fact about Lyon County is that it is home to Fort Churchill State Historic Park, a former United States Army fort that was built in 1861 to protect early settlers and guard the Pony Express route. The fort, now a well-preserved adobe ruin, offers visitors a glimpse of Nevada's fascinating past.
