Mineral County, located in the western part of the great state of Nevada, was established on August 15, 1911. It was formed from the southern part of Esmeralda County, and its creation was fueled by the local mining boom in the early 20th century. The county seat is located in the town of Hawthorne, which houses the majority of the county's population.

One of the key historical aspects of Mineral County is the mining activity that influenced its birth. Mining for silver, gold, copper, and other minerals began in the late 19th century and continued well into the 20th century, making it a crucial factor in the formation and development of the county. The rich mineral deposits in the area attracted settlers and contributed to the growth of several mining communities, such as Aurora, Broken Hills, and Mina.

The establishment of Hawthorne Army Depot in the early 20th century also played a significant role in the history of Mineral County. This ammunition storage facility grew to be one of the world's largest, bringing employment opportunities, economic growth, and increased population to the area.

A fun fact about Mineral County is that it's home to Walker Lake, a natural freshwater lake situated in the Great Basin. The lake is a remnant of ancient Lake Lahontan, which existed more than 12,000 years ago, covering a large area of present-day northwestern Nevada. Walker Lake is now a popular destination for fishing, boating, and other recreational activities.
