Storey County is a small county located in the northwestern part of the great state of Nevada in the United States. Established in 1861, it was named in honor of Captain Edward Farris Storey, a settler who was killed during the Pyramid Lake War in 1860. The history of Storey County is heavily tied to the rise of mining in the region, particularly during the Comstock Lode silver strike.

The Comstock Lode, discovered in 1859, was the first significant silver discovery in the US, leading to the rapid growth in population and development in the area. The town of Virginia City grew exponentially as prospectors and miners flocked to the region in search of fortune. As the population surged, there was a need for a separate county, thus leading to the creation of Storey County. Virginia City, the county seat, became a significant boomtown in the mid-late 19th century.

The rich and well-preserved history of the area can be seen in its historic sites, including the Virginia City Historic District. This now attracts many tourists and history enthusiasts who visit the region for its landmarks, museums, and numerous special events held throughout the year.

One fun fact about Storey County is that it was home to the legendary newspaperman, Samuel Langhorne Clemens (better known as Mark Twain). He began his journalism career in Virginia City at the Territorial Enterprise Newspaper. It was during his time in Storey County that he first used his famous pen name, Mark Twain.
