Allegany County is located in the southern part of New York State, founded on April 7, 1806. The county was created by an act of New York State legislature from portions of Genesee County and Steuben County. It was named after a Lenape Native American word "Allegheny" or "Ohi:yo' " which means 'beautiful river'. The county is primarily rural and has a population of around 48,000 people.

One of the primary economic activities in Allegany County during the 19th and early 20th century was the production of timber and the establishment of sawmills. The economy of the county later diversified into oil production, agriculture, and manufacturing industries. The county is also home to Alfred University and Houghton College, attracting students from around the world.

Alfred University, founded in 1836, is notable for being one of the earliest co-educational institutions in the US, as well as for its ceramics programs, which later led to the establishment of the New York State College of Ceramics. Allegany County also played a role in the Underground Railroad, helping slaves escape to freedom in Canada during the 19th century.

A fun fact about Allegany County is the presence of the annual Great Wellsville Balloon Rally, held every summer since 1975, which is the largest hot air balloon event in New York State, drawing thousands of visitors to enjoy the colorful spectacle of hot air balloons filling the skies of Wellsville.
