Bronx County is located in the northernmost part of New York City and is one of its five boroughs. It became a separate county on January 1, 1914, after its separation from New York County (Manhattan). The area was first settled by Swedish and Dutch settlers in the early 17th century. It was later named after Jonas Bronck, a Swedish immigrant, who arrived in 1639 and established the Bronck Farm along the Harlem River in the present-day Bronx.

Throughout the 19th century, the Bronx saw agriculture and industry thrive, leading to population growth and urbanization. The construction of railroad lines further sparked the growth of industries and the influx of new immigrants. The turn of the 20th century saw the rapid development of residential communities in the Bronx. As a result, the Bronx was officially annexed to New York City in 1874, with the western part of the borough first joining, followed by the eastern part in 1895.

The Bronx emerged as a cultural hub for many communities in the 20th century. It prospered in the arts and sports, opened many public parks, and developed its public transportation infrastructure. However, the mid-20th century marked a decline in the borough due to economic challenges, causing urban decay and a diminishing population. Thankfully, the Bronx went through revitalization efforts beginning in the late 20th century, which continues today.

A fun fact about the Bronx is that it is the birthplace of hip-hop music. DJ Kool Herc, who is considered the "father of hip-hop," first experimented with creating music by combining dancehall beats and American funk at a block party in the Bronx in the early 1970s. This innovative style laid the foundation for hip-hop, and the Bronx soon became the epicenter of a new cultural movement that has since spread across the world.
