Broome County is located in the Southern Tier of New York State, USA. Established in 1806, it was named after John Broome, who was the Lieutenant Governor of New York at the time. The county has a rich historical background and has played an essential role in the region's development. The area was originally inhabited by the Iroquois Confederacy, dominated by the Onondaga, Oneida, Cayuga, and Susquehannock tribes.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Broome County became an industrial center, primarily due to the influence of the Chenango Canal (1837) and the arrival of the railroad in the 1840s. Industries such as shoe manufacturing, cigar production, and Endicott-Johnson shoe corporation flourished in the region, contributing significantly to the local economy. This period of growth also saw an influx of European immigrants, attracted by employment opportunities.

Binghamton, the county seat of Broome County, became a prominent center for technological advancements during the 20th century. IBM (International Business Machines) was founded in the city in 1914 by Thomas J. Watson, playing a pivotal role in the growth of technology and computer industries in the region. Binghamton was also known for its cigar factories in the late 1800s and early 1900s, which produced millions of cigars annually.

A fun fact about Broome County is that it is home to the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, a Minor League Baseball team and the Double-A affiliate of the New York Mets. The team's name was chosen in a fan vote and derives from the region's rich history of carousel manufacturing. There are six historic carousels throughout the county, which have been nicknamed "The Carousel Capital of the World."
