Chenango County is located in the central region of New York State and was officially established on March 15, 1798. It was formed from the merging of parts of Tioga and Herkimer counties. The name "Chenango" comes from a Native American word, which is said to mean "large bull-thistle" or "pleasant river." The county seat is the historic town of Norwich.

The region was initially occupied by the Oneida, who were part of the Iroquois Confederacy. European settlers, primarily from New England, began arriving in the late 18th century. The area was primarily used for agriculture, driven by the fertile soils and proximity to the Susquehanna and Chenango Rivers. Prominent industries in the 19th and early 20th centuries included lumbering, tanning, and manufacturing.

The Chenango Canal, built in 1837, ran through the county and connected the Susquehanna River to the Erie Canal, which played a significant role in the area's economic growth. The canal operated until 1878 when railway systems replaced it as the primary mode of transportation.

Today, Chenango County is home to a variety of industries including agriculture, manufacturing, and healthcare. The county has a rich history that can be appreciated through various historical societies, museums, and restored buildings in the area.

Fun fact: Chenango County is home to the Northeast Classic Car Museum, which showcases a collection of more than 170 classic and vintage vehicles, including the largest collection of Franklin luxury automobiles in the world.
