Clinton County is located in the northeastern part of New York state and is named after George Clinton, the first governor of New York and Vice President under Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Established on March 7, 1788, the county played a significant role in early American history. It has a rich past closely tied to the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the era of westward expansion.

The county occupies a strategic location on the border of the United States and Canada, which led to several conflicts between the two territories, particularly during the War of 1812. The Battle of Plattsburgh, a crucial conflict in the war, took place in the county seat of Plattsburgh, New York, in September 1814. The American forces, led by General Alexander Macomb and Commodore Thomas Macdonough, successfully defended the region against the invading British forces, and this decisive victory secured the northern border for the United States.

Fun Fact: The Old Stone Barracks, located in Clinton County, is the oldest standing building on the former Plattsburgh Air Force Base, dating back to 1838. The building served various purposes over the years, including as a barracks for U.S. troops during the 19th and early 20th century, as well as a base hospital during the Spanish-American War. Today, it has been transformed into a craft brewery and inn, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the rich history of Clinton County while enjoying a local brew.
