Erie County, located in the western part of New York State, was established on April 2, 1821, after being separated from Niagara County. The county is strategically situated on the eastern shores of Lake Erie, with its county seat in the city of Buffalo, which also holds the distinction of being the state's second most populous city.

The region's history can be traced back to the indigenous tribes of the Iroquois Confederacy, particularly the Seneca people who initially occupied the area. Europeans first arrived in the 17th century, with French explorer Rene-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle making contact in 1669. Following the American Revolution, the land was overseen by the Holland Land Company for development and settlement, which in turn attracted an influx of settlers.

Erie County played a role in the War of 1812 when it was the site of the famous battle known as the Burning of Buffalo, where the invading British army laid waste to the village of Buffalo, which catalyzed the city's rebuilding and further development.

The completion of the Erie Canal in 1825 significantly impacted Erie County's growth, fostering trade and transportation connections between the Great Lakes region and the Atlantic Coast. The county's thriving grain, steel, and automotive industries contributed to its rapid expansion throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.

A fun fact about Erie County is that it is home to the annual National Buffalo Wing Festival, which takes place every Labor Day weekend. The festival, attracting tens of thousands of visitors each year, celebrates Buffalo's culinary invention - the Buffalo wing, which was first served at the city's Anchor Bar in 1964.
