USDA Boundary Details

Essex County is located in the northeastern part of the state of New York and covers an area of approximately 1,916 square miles. Established on March 12, 1799, the county was named after the English county of Essex due to the area's resemblance in terms of its rural landscape.

Essex County thrived during the late 18th and early 19th century, particularly through its contributions to the iron industry during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. Towns like Keeseville were known for their ironworks, providing valuable industrial resources to the nation during times of conflict.

The county is also known for its picturesque scenery and recreational activities, with the famous Adirondack Park and High Peaks region drawing countless outdoor enthusiasts for hiking, skiing, and other pursuits. The park is technically larger than Yellowstone, Yosemite, Glacier, and the Grand Canyon combined! The area is peppered with numerous lakes, mountains, and dense forests, creating a stunning backdrop for both residents and visitors alike.

One fun fact about Essex County is that Lake Placid, located within the county, has hosted two Winter Olympic Games, those of 1932 and 1980. The 1980 Winter Olympics included the iconic "Miracle on Ice" event, in which the underdog US men's hockey team defeated the heavily favored Soviet Union team, providing a boost to national pride during the Cold War era.
