Genesee County, New York
.Genesee County is located in the western part of New York State and was first established on March 30, 1802. It was named after the Seneca Indian word "Gen-nis'-hee-yo," meaning "the Beautiful Valley." The county's land was initially a part of the Territory of the Six Nations (Iroquois Confederacy) and then the Phelps and Gorham Purchase, a large tract of land sold by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to land speculators in 1788.
In 1801, the Holland Land Company, a Dutch land investment company, acquired most of the land in Genesee County, dividing it into townships and making it available for settlement. The county played an essential role during the early years of American westward migration mainly because of its strategic location - it was situated along vital transportation routes such as the Great Indian Warpath and the Genesee Road (later known as State Route 5).
The opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 further accelerated Genesee County's development, promoting economic growth and the movement of goods and people through the region. Agriculture has been, and still is, a significant part of the county's economy, with dairy farming being a primary contributor.
Batavia is the county seat, located near the center of Genesee County. Also, the city became the site of the first-ever deaf education asylum in New York State called the New York State School for the Deaf in 1817.
